About

Rukhsana Ahmad is a British writer of Pakistani origin who works across several genres. Her stage plays have won many accolades. Homing Birds was shortlisted for Best Stage Production in 2019 by Asian Media Awards. River on Fire was runner-up for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. Her books include: The Hope Chest, The Gatekeeper’s Wife and other storiesMistaken: Annie Besant in India and Homing Birds.

She has scripted several original plays for BBC Radio 4 and World Service. Adaptations include Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children (nomination Sony award), The Far Pavilions by M. M Kaye, Maps for Lost Lovers by Nadeem Aslam and Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys, (nominated for Best Adaptation by the Writers’ Guild Award). She has also adapted Nadeem Aslam’s Maps for Lost Lovers for the screen.

Rukhsana co-founded Kali Theatre Company (show link), a new writing company dedicated to supporting Asian women writers to develop their craft for the stage.
